Join the Freemasons in Birmingham

Wythall Lodge No. 5665 · a Birmingham lodge since 1937

If you are thinking of joining the Freemasons in Birmingham, Wythall Lodge No. 5665 would be glad to hear from you. We are a Birmingham lodge by birth—consecrated at Kings Heath in 1937 and named after a village on the city’s southern edge—and many of our members live in and around the city today. We are friendly, unpretentious, and always pleased to meet men who are curious about Freemasonry, whether they are ready to join or simply want to ask questions.

Our Birmingham roots

Wythall Lodge was consecrated on 9 September 1937, in the same year that the Masonic Hall at Kings Heath first opened its doors, and it met there—in the south of Birmingham—for the better part of nine decades. In September 2012 the Lodge celebrated seventy-five years of Freemasonry at the Moseley Masonic Hall, and its consecration papers, founders’ jewels and decades of summonses are preserved by the Worcestershire Masonic Library and Museum.

The Lodge now meets a short drive east of the city at Knowle Masonic Centre, 1621 Warwick Road, Knowle, Solihull B93 9LF, on the third Monday of the month from October to April, December excepted. The venue has changed; the character of the Lodge—and its Birmingham membership—has not.

Our members range in age from their twenties to their eighties and come from every walk of life: tradesmen, teachers, engineers, businessmen, the retired and the just-getting-started. What they share is a wish to be part of something older and larger than themselves.

Getting to us from Birmingham

Knowle Masonic Centre stands on the A4141 Warwick Road at Knowle, close to the M42—about half an hour from central Birmingham, and less from the south and east of the city. From Kings Heath, Moseley, Hall Green and the surrounding districts where the Lodge spent its first decades, the drive is a comfortable one, and there is parking at the Centre.

Meetings are followed by dinner together at the festive board, which many members would tell you is half the point of the evening. You can read more about the venue, directions and parking on our Freemasons at Knowle Masonic Centre page.

Joining the Freemasons in Birmingham

Becoming a Freemason is more straightforward than many people expect. Any man aged eighteen or over, of good character, who holds a belief in a Supreme Being, may apply—Freemasonry welcomes men of every faith and background. It is not a religion, and the discussion of religion and politics is set aside at our meetings.

You need not wait to be invited, and you need not know an existing member. The first move is yours to make, and there are just three steps from first enquiry to membership.

  1. I
Write to the Secretary. Send a short email saying a little about yourself and what has drawn you to Freemasonry. There is no form to complete and no commitment at this stage—just the start of a conversation.
  2. II
Meet us. We will invite you to a relaxed social evening at Knowle Masonic Centre, where you can meet the members and ask anything you wish, with no obligation on either side.
  3. III
Take your time. If the Lodge feels right for you, we will guide you through the application. Our full guide to becoming a Freemason in Birmingham & Solihull explains every step. Most men are initiated within a few months of first getting in touch.
